My friends version of windows had slowly slowed down to a crawl over the years on his Samsung NP300V5A-A05UK Laptop ( so he had the 'genius' [not] idea of formatting the whole drive and installing windows Ultimate he got from elsewhere. Ok thanks a lot for above advise, it did help, as he did indeed re-install a x64 version which explains why none of the drivers I tried to download for it worked.

I've now found out that the samsung recovery partition is still there. Driver Usb Digital Microscope. As when I installed the x32 OEM windows version the HD drive options it gave to install to were three: System, Standard Hard-Drive and a 20 GB Samsung 'system restore' partition.

So, now on pressing f4 on startup (stated by Samsung to be the way to do a factory reset) does now indeed get into the recovery partition, and it seems I am able to do the Samsung recovery from there. With the x64 version this did not work. Consider this solved.
